FAQ
At Sensory Space, our therapy offers comprehensive support for children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Through tailored interventions, we focus on enhancing social communication skills and fostering meaningful relationships with peers and family. Addressing specific challenges associated with dyslexia, dyspraxia, and dyscalculia, our approach contributes to improved literacy and numeracy skills for enhanced academic performance. Furthermore, our therapy targets executive function challenges, promoting increased independence in daily activities. By improving communication abilities, we alleviate frustration and stress, enabling children to express themselves effectively and understand others. Additionally, our therapists incorporate diverse strategies aligned with multisensory learning, accommodating the various learning styles of children with neurodevelopmental disorders.
Depending on the child’s age and level of ability, the assessment can be play-based or involve standardised assessments. If you are unsure about the assessment you require, please get in touch with our centre to discuss this with one of the therapists. Parents will be provided with a written report and recommendations following the child’s assessment.
We understand that each child’s development is unique, and we are committed to providing personalised care. If your child is experiencing communication challenges, has not started speaking, or if you have concerns about their development, please contact us to book an appointment. We also offer support and suggest alternative therapies while you await a visit with an SLT. Our aim is to reduce any frustration your child may be experiencing and to effectively support their communication needs.
If you’re uncertain whether your child needs Speech and Language intervention, consider observing their communication skills. Look for any difficulties in expressing themselves, understanding others, or reaching language milestones. If you notice persistent challenges, it might be beneficial to schedule a consultation or an assessment with our professionals. We’re here to discuss your concerns, answer any questions, and provide guidance on the best course of action for your child’s communication development.
Yes, we offer comprehensive assessments for children who experience stuttering or stammering, and we are particularly sensitive to the challenges that can exacerbate speech difficulties, such as anxiety. Our assessment process is designed to understand the nature of your child’s speech patterns and the factors that contribute to their stuttering. We recognise that emotional states can impact speech, and our therapists are skilled in creating a supportive environment to address both the physical aspects of speech and the emotional well-being of your child.
If your child’s stuttering persists beyond the early years and is affecting their self-esteem or daily communication, it’s important to seek help. We provide tailored therapy that includes strategies to manage stuttering, especially during times of stress or excitement. Our goal is to help your child communicate more fluently and confidently. We’re here to support your family with information, therapy options, and coping strategies. Please contact us for more information or to schedule a consultation.
Typically, SLT looks at:
-Speech sound development;
-How sounds are produced? i.e. Does the child say ‘tar’ for ‘car’, ‘wed’ for ‘red’? ;
-Language development;
-The child’s understanding and use of language;
-Social communication/Pragmatic development;
-Looking at verbal and non-verbal communication. Does your child follow the often ‘unspoken’ rules of conversation and storytelling (e.g. taking turns in conversations, looking at the speaker, standing at an appropriate distance from the speaker, using facial expressions and gestures);
-Play skills;
-Oral motor skills;
-Use and function of the lips, tongue, jaw, teeth, and the hard and soft palates;
-Feeding and swallowing difficulties.
Speech and Language therapy (SLT) intervention encompasses a range of strategies to address diverse needs. This includes direct one-to-one therapy sessions tailored to the individual child. It extends beyond the child, involving crucial elements such as parent training and teacher training, recognising the collaborative effort needed for effective support. Group therapy sessions provide a dynamic environment for shared learning and interaction. Moreover, SLT offers valuable advice for adapting to various settings, be it at home, preschool, or school. To ensure consistent progress, personalised home and/or school programs are designed, fostering a holistic approach to speech and language development.
As a parent of a nonverbal child, it’s essential to explore communication strategies that cater to your child’s unique needs. One highly effective program we recommend is the Hanen More than Words program, facilitated by our experienced Speech and Language therapist. This evidence-based approach empowers parents of neurodiverse children with practical tools and strategies to enhance communication and social skills. By participating in the More than Words program, you’ll gain valuable insights and techniques to foster meaningful connections with your child. Additionally, seeking guidance from speech and language professionals and creating a supportive environment at home can further contribute to your child’s communication development. Remember, each child is unique, and a personalised approach can make a significant difference in their journey towards effective communication.
Absolutely. Our clinic specialises in providing speech and language therapy (SLT) for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We recognise that children with ASD may have unique strengths, such as a good vocabulary, but might also face challenges with articulation, social cues, and maintaining conversations. Our therapy programs are tailored to address these specific needs. We also offer sensory integration support during SLT sessions to help children who may become dysregulated. Our therapists are experienced in working with children with ASD to improve their ability to communicate their thoughts and feelings effectively. If your child has been recommended for SLT as part of their ASD assessment, we are here to support you and can work closely with occupational therapists and psychologists to provide comprehensive care.
